Demographics

Hermiston has been the right place for the right times. Located in a relatively dry section of the state of Oregon, positioned between the Cascade Mountains to the west and the Blue Mountains to the East, Hermiston is placed in a unique geographical area that offers an extended growing season and a variety of agricultural crops and products. The immediate Hermiston area has been able to diversify its economy with food processing, cold storage and warehousing and distribution facilities.

You’ll find us at the junction of two interstate freeway systems as well as a major north-south arterial, we are located within easy driving distances of Spokane, Boise, Seattle and Portland as well as cities in Montana, Utah, Wyoming, California and British Columbia.  We are also home to the Union Pacific Railroad switching facility and adjacent to a refrigerator cargo dock for transportation on the Columbia River transportation system.  In addition to being on major freeways, Rail and River systems we are based on the information super highway with a redundant fiber optic communications system with connectivity to both Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington telecommunication hubs.

Just as we are the right place for a diversity of business, we are the right place for a diversity of people and interests.  We offer and abundance of outdoor, civic and cultural activities that make our community very saleable to employees and management alike.  Striving for a better future, we are the future of Eastern Oregon.

Growth in the west end of Umatilla County has exceeded overall growth in the County due to the impact of the "Big Four" which includes construction of Wal-Mart Distribution Center and Retail Superstore, Union Pacific Railroad regional engine repair facility, Two Rivers Correctional Institution, and chemical demilitarization and incineration at Umatilla Chemical Depot.
